🌬️ The Shamal Winds: Dust Storms You Can't Escape
But mould isn't the only problem.
Right now, the Shamal winds are blowing — strong northwesterly winds that sweep across the Arabian Peninsula from March through August. These winds carry massive amounts of dust from as far away as Iraq and Saudi Arabia, loading the atmosphere with tons of suspended particles.
The UAE National Centre of Meteorology has issued severe dust storm warnings across Gulf states, with visibility expected to drop below 500 metres. In Abu Dhabi, studies show that maximum PM10 levels reached 218 μg/m³ in summer, with PM2.5 peaking at 60 μg/m³. To put that in perspective, the World Health Organization's annual guideline for PM2.5 is just 5 μg/m³.
